Optimizing Treatment and Functional Outcomes in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma With Barbara Burtness, MD, and Lynsey Teulings, NP

· Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) represents a heterogeneous group of tumors that originate in the lip/oral cavity, hypopharynx, oropharynx, nasopharynx, and larynx. An estimated 66,630 new cases are diagnosed in the United States annually, and 14,620 people die of the disease (Siegel et al, 2021). Historically, HNSCC has been associated with tobacco and alcohol use; however, infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is now recognized as a causative factor for a gr...

Head and Neck Cancer: Reducing In-Hospital Mortality With Eric Adjei Boakye, PhD

Over 4% of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients who are hospitalized die during their stay in the hospital. How can this number be reduced? In a cross-sectional study recently published in JAMA Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery, a research team led by Eric Adjei Boakye, PhD, found that among a variety of other patient- and hospital-related factors, male sex, weekend admissions, and treatment at nonteaching hospitals are associated with increased in-hospital mortality. In this interview with i...

Head and Neck Cancer: What Factors Affect Risk of In-Hospital Mortality?

Along with a variety of other patient- and hospital-related factors, male sex, weekend admissions, and treatment at nonteaching hospitals are associated with increased in-hospital mortality for patients with head and neck cancer, report the authors of a cross-sectional study published today in JAMA Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. Using the 2008 to 2013 National Inpatient Sample database, the investigators identified adult hospitalized patients diagnosed with either primary or secondary he...

NSAIDs Increase Survival for PIK3CA-altered Head and Neck Cancer

According to a new study, over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, have been found to significantly increase survival in patients with PIK3CA-altered head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). A mutation in PIK3CA, the gene encoding p110a and the catalytic subunit of phosphoinositide-(3)-kinase a, commonly occurs in HNSCC. In prior research, a sample of 504 patients with HNSCC tumors yielded 174 tumors containing a PIK3CA mutation. In patients with HN...

Genetic Cause Identified in Acinic Cell Carcinoma

For the first time, researchers have gained insight into the molecular causes of acinic cell carcinoma, the third most common salivary gland cancer. "Our research means that we can now diagnose acinic cell carcinomas in the salivary glands more easily and understand the fundamental biological processes behind tumor growth. In the long term, we hope that we will also be able to develop new ways of treating patients on the basis of this new research," commented Dr. Florian Haller, Professor in th...
