Improving Understanding of Evolved Treatment Concepts and New Data in Advanced Prostate Cancer

i3 Health recently provided an educational activity that has challenged knowledge gaps experienced by clinicians regarding the understanding of evolved treatment concepts and new data in advanced prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common tumor type affecting men in the United States. An estimated 299,010 new cases are diagnosed annually, and 35,250 people die of the disease. Research indicates that at least some of the continuing burden of prostate cancer may be attributed to the failure of the multidisciplinary team to maintain a working knowledge of emerging data and consensus recommendations that can rationally inform clinical decision making. Therefore, it is imperative that clinicians receive appropriate and adequate up-to-date education on the topic of advanced prostate cancer.

To address the knowledge gaps experienced by clinicians regarding evolved treatment concepts and new data in advanced prostate cancer, a live symposium and enduring online activity was created. The live symposium was held on January 22, 2023, at The Society of Government Service Urologists James C. Kimbrough Urological Seminar in Tucson, AZ, and had 40 learners, all of whom completed the activity for continuing medical education (CME) credit. The enduring online video was made available on i3 Health’s website from February 10, 2023, through February 9, 2024, and had 11,167 learners and 544 completions for CME credit.

Both the live symposium and online activity were led by a key leader in the field of prostate cancer, Tanya Dorff, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Section Chief of the Genitourinary Cancers Program at City of Hope. Most participants were registered nurses and physicians, followed by physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and those who chose “other” as their profession.

The baseline data collected revealed knowledge gaps in the following areas:

    • Distinguishing biomarkers and clinical characteristics that can guide therapy selection for patients with prostate cancer
    • Assessing practice guidelines on biomarker testing for patients with prostate cancer
    • Evaluating recent clinical trial findings on novel treatment strategies for metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC)
    • Appraising emerging data on novel combination and sequential treatment strategies for nonmetastatic and metastatic CRPC

Participants were given a matching pretest and posttest at the beginning and end of the activity, respectively:

Upon completion of the activity, 88% of participants reported that they felt more confident in treating their patients with prostate cancer, and 87% reported that they felt that the material presented would be used to improve the outcomes of their patients.

The data revealed by the posttest assessment affirm the effectiveness of online educational content pertaining to the topic of advanced prostate cancer. Based on these data, i3 Health has determined that the multidisciplinary team may benefit from CME activities that provide prostate cancer education on:

    • Biomarker and clinical characteristics to guide therapy selection
    • Practice guidelines on biomarker testing
    • Recent clinical trial findings on efficacy and safety of emerging therapies, including data on combination and sequential treatment strategies
