Lobular Breast Cancer Awareness Day: Making Strides in Research With Jason Mouabbi, MD

    Expert Perspectives · Keira Smith · 2024-10-15

October 15, 2024, is the inaugural Lobular Breast Cancer Awareness Day! Five states—Texas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania—have officially declared the day, and ceremonies are happening at MD Anderson and other cancer centers to commemorate this milestone and raise awareness of lobular breast cancer. OncData Editorial Board member Dr. Jason Mouabbi, who was instrumental in having this day declared, sat down with us to shed additional light on:

    • The incidence of lobular breast cancer and how it often presents differently than other subtypes of breast cancer
    • Advances in screening and staging imaging
    • The recent activation and enrollment of the first study for metastatic lobular breast cancer patients in the United States
    • Other studies which will soon be enrolling patients within the next few months
    • Hope for patients facing a diagnosis of lobular breast cancer
    • And more!

“I’m super excited that this subtype of breast cancer is finally getting the spotlight it deserves. Lobular breast cancer has been historically understudied, which is unfair to the patients who have to face this disease. Finally, we’re making strong steps in the right direction—increasing awareness and getting better diagnostic tools, better imaging, and better treatments. I want to reassure our patients and everybody who’s facing this diagnosis that we’re working on it, day and night. We’re working relentlessly, and we’re going to get to a stage where we can detect it better, treat it better, and hopefully cure it.” – Jason Mouabbi, MD
