    Expert Perspectives · Keira Smith · 2025-07-10

You are invited to join i3 Health for a special live webinar, Optimizing Neuroendocrine Tumor Outcomes: Closing the Gaps in Diagnosis and Care. Dr. Aman Chauhan, Leader of the Neuroendocrine Tumor Program at the University of Miami, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, will share his expertise and latest insights in the treatment of NETs. In this interview, Dr. Chauhan shares a preview of the topics he is excited to highlight during the webinar, including the recent advances which are transforming patient care, the emerging field of theranostics, the evolving role of multidisciplinary care, and practical tips for effective team collaboration. The webinar will be held on two days: Thursday, July 17th at 12:00 pm ET and Tuesday, August 5th at 3:00 pm ET.

    Advances in Diagnosis and Management

“Neuroendocrine oncology has seen some significant strides in the last 10 years. It’s a very exciting time for this rare cancer,” Dr. Chauhan shared. He highlighted that improvements in pathology and molecular characterization have transformed the field. For example, the recognition of well-differentiated grade 3 neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) has refined classification and treatment approaches.

“We now have a better understanding of the molecular underpinnings of these cancers, and more accurate imaging tools like dotatate positron emission tomography (PET) scans have catapulted the field forward,” he explained. These advances have led to more precise diagnoses and a broader array of therapeutic options, including targeted therapies and radiopharmaceuticals such as peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT).

    Addressing Challenges and Misconceptions

Despite these advances, NETs remain highly heterogeneous, presenting unique challenges. “One of the challenges in neuroendocrine oncology is a huge heterogeneity or variation in presentations, as well as the natural history of disease progression,” Dr. Chauhan noted. He emphasized that NETs can arise in any organ system and vary widely in grade, histology, and functional status. “There is a reason why zebras are our mascot—no two zebras have the same stripes. Similarly, two pancreatic NETs can have very different presentations and outcomes.” This diversity necessitates individualized care, moving away from a “cookie-cutter” approach and leveraging the growing arsenal of treatment options.

The Critical Role of Multidisciplinary Care

Dr. Chauhan underscored the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in managing NETs. “It is highly crucial to get a multidisciplinary perspective when managing an advanced or metastatic neuroendocrine cancer patient,” he said. Even in advanced disease, specialties such as surgery, interventional radiology, and nuclear medicine play vital roles. “To be able to tailor the management, we oftentimes present our cases at a dedicated multidisciplinary NET tumor board. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of multidisciplinary involvement in management,” he added.

What to Expect From the Webinar

Dr. Chauhan is eager to share both foundational knowledge and the latest research. “We are very excited to share a little bit of everything, from NETs 101 to what’s up and coming,” he said. The webinar will address nuances such as distinguishing functional from non-functional NETs, sequencing therapies, and integrating prognostic factors like Ki-67 and tumor burden into treatment decisions. “Now we have a problem of plenty—we have many treatment options. How do we pick, and how do different prognostic factors play into that decision?” he posed.

    Key Takeaways

    • Significant advances in diagnosis and treatment have transformed NET care.
    • Heterogeneity in NETs requires individualized, patient-centered approaches.
    • Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for optimal outcomes.
    • The field is rapidly evolving, with new therapies and research on the horizon.

Be sure to register for the webinar on July 17th or August 5th to gain practical insights and strategies for optimizing NET outcomes. As Dr. Chauhan concluded, “We are just scratching the tip of the iceberg—there’s much more to come.”
