Additional Advances in Renal Cell Carcinoma Research and Clinical Trials With Nazy Zomorodian, NP, RNC, MSN, CUNP, CCRC

    Expert Perspectives · Lyn Brook · 2025-03-03

As we recognize Kidney Cancer Awareness Month this March, advancements in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) treatment continue to evolve. Recently, Nazy Zomorodian, NP, RNC, MSN, CUNP, CCRC, a Nurse Practitioner and expert in genitourinary oncology, chaired the i3 Health’s NCPD activity titled Toxicity Management and Symptom Control in Advanced RCC: Playbook Update. In this interview, she shares updates in RCC treatment, strategies for toxicity management, and the importance of patient education.

    Managing Treatment Toxicity and Symptoms

The Importance of Adverse Event Management

When it comes to treating advanced kidney cancer, balancing efficacy with toxicity management is crucial. “As toxic as these drugs are, we are giving them to patients with advanced kidney cancer disease,” Ms. Zomorodian explained. “Fighting cancer is not an easy fight, so we’re bringing the big guns, and every drug has side effects.”

To mitigate these adverse effects, multidisciplinary approaches are essential. “We take the adverse events of these drugs very seriously and are trying to take a lot of preventative measures to avoid these side effects becoming higher-grade and interfering with patients’ daily living,” she added.

    Prevention and Multidisciplinary Care

Managing side effects requires comprehensive care involving multiple specialties. “It really takes a village, and it’s just not one person’s job—it’s a team effort,” Ms. Zomorodian emphasized. Preventative strategies include patient skin health monitoring, cardiovascular assessments before treatment, and referrals to specialists such as endocrinologists, cardiologists, and dermatologists as needed.

Emerging Clinical Trials and Research Directions

Ongoing research in RCC treatment is shifting toward a dual focus on drug efficacy and quality of life. “Many large pharmaceutical and biotech companies are incorporating quality-of-life studies alongside clinical trials,” Ms. Zomorodian noted. These efforts aim to balance treatment effectiveness with minimizing patient burden.

Ensuring that the harm of treatment does not outweigh its benefits is a guiding principle. “We want to make sure that the damage is not worse than what we are trying to do—basically, do no harm,” she said.

The Role of Education in RCC Treatment Advancements

    Healthcare Provider Education

As new treatments emerge, continuous education for nurses and other healthcare providers is essential. “It’s really important that when you highlight the adverse events of these drugs, it goes with some kind of guidelines—what to expect, how to manage it, and how to prevent it,” Ms. Zomorodian explained.

    Patient Education and Awareness

Educating patients in an accessible manner is just as vital. “We obviously need patient education sources that are different from healthcare provider materials, because we need to speak to patients in a language that is understandable and easier for them to absorb,” she noted.

Promoting Kidney Cancer Awareness and Early Detection

    Challenges in Early Diagnosis

One of the main challenges with kidney cancer is the lack of widespread screening protocols. “Unlike prostate cancer, we do not have a routine screening process for kidney cancer,” Ms. Zomorodian stated. “By the time patients have symptoms, it’s often too late, and the disease has progressed significantly.”

    Hope for Future Screening Methods

Efforts are underway to develop early detection tools. “Hopefully, we will get to the point where we have a screening process for kidney cancer like we do for breast and prostate cancer,” she said. Early detection would be a significant breakthrough, allowing treatment to begin before the disease reaches a metastatic stage.

    Key Takeaways for Healthcare Professionals

    1. Balancing Efficacy with Toxicity Management – RCC treatment requires a strategic approach to minimizing side effects while ensuring therapeutic benefits
    2. Multidisciplinary Care is Essential – Effective RCC management involves collaboration among nurses, oncologists, cardiologists, dermatologists, and other specialists
    3. Quality-of-Life Considerations in Clinical Trials – New research is increasingly integrating quality-of-life measures alongside drug efficacy studies
    4. Education is Critical – Both healthcare providers and patients must receive up-to-date information tailored to their needs
    5. Advocating for Early Detection – More research and advocacy efforts are needed to develop RCC screening protocols

Final Message: Listen to Your Body

In recognition of Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, Ms. Zomorodian stressed the importance of self-awareness and early action. “Regardless of whether you are a patient, caregiver, or healthcare provider, you have to listen to your body,” she advised. “If something feels unusual, don’t ignore it—explore it and find out the reason.”

By staying informed, engaging in multidisciplinary care, and advocating for early detection, healthcare professionals can play a crucial role in advancing RCC treatment and improving patient outcomes.
